Darling in the Franxx - The Kids
For once, I'm not going to talk about the not so subtle symbolism of the series.
Instead, I'm going to talk about the kids finally interacting like people.
Episode 5 was not an action-heavy episode. However, that does not mean it wasn't important. It did something that had been missing from the series for a long time. It gave me reason to care about the cast.
Just about every moment in episode 5 serves a purpose, and that's great. For a long time now, 02 had been the best character by virtue of being the only one who had a character. Ichigo was a distant second since she at least had the jealousy thing going on. Hiro was bland. The rest were just a bunch of faces in the background.
Episode 5 changes that. It introduces a dynamic, interactions that feel very genuine. Hiro shows more sides of himself this episode than ever before. Ichigo struggles to reconcile her jealously with her protectiveness of Hiro and her role in the team. Goro... Goro goes from bland guy whose name I could barely remember to bro.
He's Gobro now.
Even the less important kids get something to do. Zorome gets to be more than just annoying. Mitsuru shows he is still dealing with what happened to him the other episode. Kokoro (fat kid's partner) actually gets something to do other than just being the happy one.
So yeah, good going! Action is good but I really hope we get more episodes like this one too.
